Chardonnay: is a medium-to full-bodied white wine with rich citrus flavors and sometimes a buttery tone from fermentation and aging in oak barrels. A good choice when eating chicken or seafood.
Sauvignon Blanc: Originated in the Loire Valley of France. Lighter than Chardonnay, a dry white wine with distinctive herbaceous qualities. A versatile food wine for shellfish, lighter fish and chicken dishes, dips, garlic or Italian seasonings in creamy sauces, fragrant salads.
Semillon: Originating from Bordeaux. Makes a very good sweet white wine. Aromas of subtle fruit to floral and some spice to a bit of earthy and herbal. It will also age well over the long haul.
Riesling: Originated in the Rhine region of Germany. Rieslings range from slightly to very sweet and can be either table or dessert wines. Riesling wines are usually varietally pure and are seldom oaked. Drier versions go well with chicken and pork dishes, as well as spicy foods.
Chenin Blanc: Also from the Loire Valley of France. A relatively light, fruity variety with general characteristics of citrus fruits, peach, pear, apple, and quince flavors. A nice wine with casual meals like garden salads.
Cabernet Sauvignon: Originated in Medoc a sub-region of Bordeaux. Aromas of black currants, green bell-pepper or with expressions of dark fruit when young which develop other flavors,such as leather, as they age. Ideal with red meats like beef and lamb.
Pinot Noir: Originating from Burgundy. More delicate a flavour than Cabernet or Merlot, reminiscent of sweet red berries, plums, tomatoes, strawberry and tea-leaf. Excellent with chicken or lamb and dark fish such as salmon.
Merlot: One of the primary grapes in Bordeaux wine region. A medium bodied wine with flavours of berry, plum, and currant. Similar to Cabernet, but softer and fruitier. The diversity of Merlot can lend itself to a wide array of matching options.
Grenache: Originated in Spain. Is one of the most popular and widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It is generally berry-flavored and spicy but soft on the palate with a relatively high alcohol content. It is often used in Rose. Goes well with poultry like turkey and quail and mild cheeses such as Gouda, Jarlsberg and mild cheddars.
Shiraz: Also known as Syrah. Originating as an offspring of two obscure grapes from southeastern France, Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. Flavour can include from berries, chocolate, espresso and black pepper depending on the climate and soils where it is grown. As a general rule, most Australian and South African wines are labelled Shiraz, and most European wines are labelled Syrah.
